Houston Tennis Completes Islanders Open

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The University of Houston tennis team wrapped up the season-opening Islanders Open Sunday as Celia Fraser highlighted play by reaching the semifinal round in singles play.
Fraser, a sophomore from Birmingham, U.K., cruised past Lamar's Carolina Salas by a score of 6-3, 6-1 before falling in the semifinals in straight sets to Karrie Cartwright of Tyler Junior College.
Fellow sophomore Dionne Sanders also fell short in the semifinals against Lamar's Natalia Mayagoitia (6-2, 6-0) after claiming two victories on Saturday.
The Cougars ended the tournament winning six of the 10 combined singles matches, as Liselot Koenen and Jo Garvey also claimed opening-round victories on Saturday.
In doubles action, the Houston tandem of Fraser and Koenen dropped an 8-2 decision to Tyler's Cartwright and Leitz in the semifinals.
The Cougars return to the court on Sept. 30 for the three-day SDSU Invitational in San Diego, Calif.
