Two Cougars Advance in Singles Play at Islanders Open

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Celia Fraser and Dionne Sanders highlighted play for the University of Houston tennis team Saturday, advancing to the singles quarterfinals during a rain-shortened day.
Fraser, a sophomore from Birmingham, U.K., posted a 6-2, 3-6, 1-0(5) victory over Lamar's Helene Czudek to advance to the quarterfinals, where she will face Carolina Salas of Lamar.
Dionne Sanders recorded straight-set victories over Lamar's Carolina Massa (6-2, 7-5) and Calena Redondo (7-5, 6-2) to reach the quarterfinals. The Stourbridge, U.K., product will meet Natalia Mayagoitia of Lamar on Sunday.
Freshman Liselot Koenen earned her first-career singles victory with a 6-2, 6-4 triumph over Alejandra Enderica of Tyler Junior College before falling in straight sets in the round of 32 to Karrie Cartwright of Tyler.
Jo Garvey also posted an opening-round victory as the Cougars went 5-2 overall on the day, routing Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Ashley Garza by a score of 6-1, 6-1 before dropping a 6-2, 6-2 decision in the round of 32.
The Cougars will wrap up play at the Islanders Open on Sunday.
