Houston Tennis Completes Opening Day of Islanders Open

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The University of Houston tennis team kicked off the 2011-12 season Friday with the opening day of the Islanders Open at Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.
Celia Fraser and Liselot Koenen highlighted the two rounds of doubles action, topping the Tyler Junior College duo of Phiri and Saldana by a score of 8-6 after an opening round bye to advance to the semifinals.
The sophomore duo of Jo Garvey and Dionne Sanders fell in their doubles opener to Lamar's Mayagoitia and Salas by a score of 8-1.
Fraser and Koenen take on the Tyler Junior College tandem of Cartwright and Leitz at 6 p.m. on Saturday for a ticket to the final round, while singles action begins at 9 a.m.
