Houston - The University of Houston volleyball team began its 2011 campaign Tuesday morning with its first practice of the season at the Athletics/Alumni Center. The Cougars held a morning practice session and later returned to the court for an afternoon practice.
The practice comes a day after the 15 members of the squad reported to campus. Their first day at UH included moving into Cougar Place and holding a series of team meetings with the various support staff units in the Athletics Department.
"It's great to be back with the team," head coach Molly Alvey said. "The anticipation of having a good season last year and knowing the girls were working out hard during the summer makes it nice to be back in the gym."
"Today, we used our practices as an evaluation and a competition. We let the team play and gave them opportunities to stand out. It was fun to see how much we have grown in the year that my staff has been at UH. The competitive level is night-and-day different than when we started last fall."
The Cougars will hold two-a-day practices until Aug. 20 and are scheduled to play their annual Red and White Scrimmage on Aug. 19. They will take a break from the strict practice schedule to attend a team bonding event Aug. 13-16. The preseason slate will conclude with Shasta Blast on Aug. 21 at the Athletics/Alumni Center.
The 2011-12 school year begins Aug. 22 and the Cougars play host to the Flo Hyman Collegiate Cup on Aug. 26-27 to begin their season.
