Day one of the 2011 Houston football training camp is in the books and it was a productive one for the roster made up of 17 returning starters. The squad took to the field for a night practice going two hours on the nose in helmets and shocks.
The Cougars began the day with picture day and meeting with the media, followed by meetings, which led up to the first workout of the 2011 season.
TICKET SALES SURPASS 10,000: Coming off a year in 2010 where the University of Houston increased season tickets by a nation's best 82 percent, the athletic department announced season tickets for 2011 have surpassed the 10,000 mark. That number is 1,500 more than were sold at this time last year. The department has a goal to sell 15,000 tickets with 28 days remaining until kickoff. More than 3,000 tickets alone were sold in the month of August last season. With the ability for fans to purchase mini-plans in the upcoming weeks, the athletic department projects the likelihood that no single-game tickets will be available for the opener vs. UCLA on Sept. 3.
FAN APPRECIATION DAY: The Houston Football team will host a Fan Appreciation Day on Sat., Aug. 13 beginning at 2 p.m. at the Athletics/Alumni Center. Fans will be able to get autographs (limit two items per person) with their favorite players and coaches as well as face painting and inflatable games for the kids. Prior to the event, the football team will be hosting its first scrimmage of the training camp at Robertson Stadium beginning at 11:30 a.m.
OPEN SCRIMMAGES: UH will hold two scrimmages during the 2011 training camp and both will be open to the general public for viewing. The first will be at Roberson Stadium on Sat., Aug. 13 and the second on Sat., Aug. 20 at Carl Lewis Field. Both scrimmage times are set at 11:30 a.m.
SOCIAL MEDIA WEEK: The UH athletic department will be distributing all of its football news and announcements through its Twitter and Facebook accounts beginning on Mon., Aug. 8-Fri., Aug. 12. Fans wanting to stay on top of all the happenings from training camp will need to become a "follower" on Twitter or "Like" us on Facebook. www.twitter.com/UHCougarSports www.facebook.com/HoustonAthletics After 24 hours, the news will be posted on UHCougars.com.
FAMILY FUN PLAN SEASON TICKETS GOING FAST: Less than 150 Family Fun Plan season ticket packages remain for the 2011 season. The package offers great savings with the $275 cost including two adult and two youth tickets for each of UH's six home games.
ALL-DECADE TEAM VOTING: Voting closed on Monday for the All-Decade team honoring the players from the 2001-2010 seasons at the University of Houston. Announcement of the team will begin one member at a time on Aug. 15 through the athletic department's Twitter and Facebook pages. More than 2,500 fans took part in the online voting. The 25-man team will be honored at a football game this fall.
