HOUSTON - Jerusalem Groves is the newest member of the University of Houston soccer team, head coach Susan Bush announced Thursday afternoon.
"Jerry is a very technical attacking player that will compete for time in the midfield and on the front line," said Bush. "She has a tremendous soccer IQ in overall tactics. She's very versatile in the attack being either a playmaker for others in the midfield or a target player up top. Jerry strikes the ball well with both her left and right foot and will compete for time immediately. She is hungry to make a difference and will complement our returning attacking personalities well."
Groves, nicknamed Jerry, comes to Houston from Toronto, Canada. Groves had a terrific prep career north of the border but also received valuable playing time for the Jamaican National Teams - both the U17 and full national team.
"That experience at the international level has given Jerry lots leadership qualities. Playing at the high levels of international competition has given her composure in high-pressure situations."
Not only does Jerry excel on the playing field but off of it as well as she is a renown gospel singer in the city of Toronto.
"She is a committed Christian student-athlete that will diversify both our culture and also our athleticism in our program. I'm real excited what she brings to us as person and as a soccer player."
Groves is the sixth signee for Bush's 2011 soccer class. She will join fellow newcomers Sydney George, Sharis Lachappelle, Alexis Weaver, Kayla Walker and Kelsey Zamora in the fall.
