EUGENE, Ore. - Two more Cougars advanced to the NCAA Championships Friday afternoon in Eugene, Ore. as Errol Nolan and Grecia Bolton qualified in their respective sprint races inside of historic Hayward Field.
After two days of the NCAA championships, that brings the total amount of qualifying Cougars to six as Alex Bentley (Pole Vault), Chris Carter and Jonathan Williams (Long Jump) advanced with their performances yesterday. Wesley Bray (Decathlon) already secured his spot at the national meet with his qualifying mark in the multievent earlier in the season.
"I'm happy with where we are at right now but felt we could have had a few more qualifiers in there," said head coach Leroy Burrell. "We're having a really solid meet on the men's side so far, and we still have the women's relays tomorrow which are really strong for us. We have to go out tomorrow and finish strong."
Nolan cruised to victory in his 400m heat and finished second overall at the Oregon Preliminaries (45.75). Despite the cold and rainy conditions, the sophomore will enter the NCAA Championships as the third overall seed. His personal best time in the event is 45.54, which he set as he won the Conference USA 400m title for the second year in a row. This is the second year in a row Nolan has qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 400m.
Grecia Bolton earned her third trip to the NCAA Championships in an individual event as she placed ninth in the 100m (11.63). The junior from Katy, Texas, qualified in the 100m in 2010 and in the 200m as a freshman in 2009. Her personal best time in the 100m is 11.46, which she set at the C-USA Outdoor meet this season.
Bolton also advanced to Sunday's quarterfinals in the 200m (23.48), running in sixth place.
Whitney Harris and Tai'shea Reese will also compete tomorrow in the 200m quarterfinals. Harris crossed the line in 17th place (23.95) and Reese took 22nd (24.17).
Harris just missed the NCAA in the 100m as she placed 13th (11.69).
"I feel bad for Whitney because the conditions were really rough out there during her heat and she just barely missed out. I was happy to see her regroup and advance in the 200."
The trio will have a busy day as they have their 200m race and all are on the 4x100m relay team with Kalyn Floyd. They enter tomorrow's race with a school-record time of 45.54.
Harris and Floyd will also compete on the 4x400m relay team along with Brittany Wallace, and Ciera Johnson.
DeMeeka Jones qualified for Sunday's quarterfinals in the 100m hurdles with a seventh-place finish (13.43w).
