HOUSTON - University of Houston women's basketball junior guard Roxana Button was one of 12 student-athletes participating in a winter sport that recently received the Conference USA Spirit of Service award. The accolade is designed to recognize the community service efforts of the league's student-athletes, based upon significant community service, good academic standing and participation in their elected sport.
The Spirit of Service award is presented three times throughout the season, with the most recent honorees representing Conference USA's winter sports: men's and women's basketball, men's and women's indoor track and field, rifle and men's and women's swimming.
Button has placed a high emphasis on reaching out to the community as part of her responsibilities of being a student-athlete at the University of Houston. Every summer, she volunteers at the Cougar basketball camp, helping develop young players from around the Houston area. For the Christmas holidays, Button has volunteered at the Rose Christmas Party, which is hosted by the Breast Cancer Foundation of Houston, delivering toys and playing games with children of cancer victims.
Button has also taken part in community projects such as the Marathan Kids' "Final Mile", which promotes health and fitness for children, as well as helping out at various Final Four outreach events locally this spring.
A native of Coppell, Texas, Button holds a 3.88 GPA in psychology and plans to attend medical school upon graduation. Button is a two-time recipient of the Commissioner's Academic Medal and, for the second-straight season, was named to both the Capital One Academic All-District Team and the C-USA All-Academic squad.
Button was one of the top performers off the bench for the Cougars this season, playing in all 32 games this season while averaging 5.3 points per game.
The rising senior currently ranks second in program history in career 3-point percentage (36.0), fifth in free-throw percentage (74.4) and sixth in made 3-pointers (87).
