HOUSTON - The University of Houston baseball team put together a strong offensive performance against Texas Southern and cruised to a 13-3 victory Wednesday night at Cougar Field.
The Cougars had 17 hits, including six doubles and a triple against the Tigers. The hit total was the team's highest since recording 18 hits on opening day. John Cannon led the way going 2-for-2 with a double and two runs scored. M.P. Cokinos added three hits, while Chase Jensen, Jake Runte and Matt Creel each had two.
"A lot of the focus has been on the lack of depth in our pitching, but the pitching staff is not what got us to .500 or 6-6," head coach Todd Whitting said. "It was a lack of offense. I put it on the hitters telling them they need to get better and they responded today. We had 17 hits and scored 13 runs. That's a pretty good day at the plate."
With the win, Houston improves to 7-6 on the season.
After struggling at the plate on Tuesday, Houston wasted little time jumping on the board in their second game in as many days. With one out in their first at bat, Caleb Ramsey drew a walk and stole second base. A groundout by Jensen would move Ramsey to third before he scored on Creel's double. Cokinos would send Creel home on a triple to right center.
The Cougars surrendered a run to Texas State in the top of the second but quickly pushed their lead to five, 6-1, in the bottom of the inning. With two outs and the bases loaded, Ramsey doubled to right center to score three UH runs before recording the fourth run of the inning on a Creel single.
Houston continued to be successful at the plate, scoring Jake Runte in the third inning on a wild pitch after reaching base on a leadoff single.
TSU was able to score a single run in the fourth inning, while holding the Cougars scoreless in their next two at bats.
UH added to its lead once again in the sixth inning. Cannon led off with a double down the left field line and Appling put runners on the corners with a single to left field. Appling would steal second during the next at bat and an overthrow by the TSU catcher on the attempt would allow Cannon to score. Jensen's RBI single pushed the Cougars' lead to seven, 9-2, before he would score on the Tigers' second balk of the night.
Houston still wasn't done scoring when they took to the field in the bottom of the seventh inning. With one out and runners on first and third, Tyler Magliolo and Jensen hit back-to-back doubles to plate three Cougar base runners.
The Tigers would score a final run in the ninth inning to close out the game.
In his first career start, Jordan Mannisto pitched 3.2 innings. He gave up two unearned runs on five hits with three strikeouts. Luke Moran improved to 1-0 pitching 3.1 scoreless innings with three strikeouts. Chase Wellbrock and Creel each added an inning of relief.
