LAFAYETTE, La. - The University of Houston golf team posted a team score of 302 in the final round Tuesday at the Louisiana Classics to fall into a tie for 12th place at Oakbourne Country Club.
Playing on the 6,898-yard, par-72 course, the Cougars finished in a tie with Kansas.
"Conditions were a little rougher today. It got really windy at the end of the round," head coach Jonathan Dismuke said. "It was a great opportunity to climb the leaderboard. Unfortunately, it just wasn't our day. We didn't take advantage of the par 5s."
Freshman Jesse Droemer continued his steady play at the tournament and tied for 12th-place with a two-day score of 218.
"I am proud of Jesse's finish," Dismuke said. "He would have liked to have shot a lower score, but it was tough out there. We just couldn't make any birdies."
Other Cougars in action were freshman Bryn Flanagan (223, t-37th), freshman Curtis Reed (224, t-42nd), and sophomore transfer Will Dusenbury and Wesley McClain, who each tied for 71st place at 233.
Kent State's John Hahn earned medalist honors with a 70 in the final round to finish at 206, four strokes ahead of LSU's Andrew Loupe and Illinois' Luke Guthrie.
Illinois fired the best team round of the day Tuesday and won the team championship with a score of 854. LSU (860), host Louisiana-Lafayette (870), Kent State (871) and Southeastern Louisiana (879) rounded out the top-five team leaders.
"This was a good finish against a strong field, by far the best field we have played all year," Dismuke said. "Hopefully we can learn from this."
