HOUSTON - Sophomore Chase Jensen hit a two-run home run in the eighth inning but it was not enough to overcome a 10-0 deficit to McNeese State as the University of Houston baseball team lost its first of two midweek contests, 10-2, Tuesday night at Cougar Field.
Jensen finished the night 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBIs. He recorded two of the Cougars' three hits in the game, with Tyler Magliolo notching the third on a pinch hit in the ninth inning.
With the loss, Houston falls to 6-6 on the season.
The Cowboys wasted little time getting on the board, jumping out to a 5-0 lead in the second inning. After loading the bases on walks, Jace Peterson put McNeese State on the board, drawing the fourth walk of the inning. Lee Orr followed with a double to left center that scored three runs and Renny Weber scored the fifth run of the inning on Seth Ganger's single to right field.
Granger pushed McNeese State ahead, 6-0, in the fifth inning, scoring on a passed ball after hitting a leadoff single through the right side.
The Cowboys capitalized on two errors by the Cougar defense to put their leadoff batters on base in the seventh inning. Those two base runners would go to score and give McNeese State an 8-0 lead.
Fielding errors again hurt the Cougars in the eighth inning after Tyler Park scored on an error by the UH third baseman that put Peterson on base. Peterson would then close out the contest scoring on a Granger groundout to third base.
In his first career start, sophomore Dakota Dill pitched 1.2 innings with a career-high five strikeouts.
