Baseball Prepares To Host Games Against McNeese State, Texas Southern

HOUSTON - The University of Houston baseball team has just one day off before they are back in action for two midweek contests at Cougar Field. UH kicks off the week Tuesday against McNeese State and then continues Wednesday against Texas Southern. Both games are scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m.

Houston (6-5) is coming off a 1-2 finish at the Houston College Classic. The Cougars dropped games against Baylor and Texas A&M but knocked off Kentucky, 8-5. For their performances in the tournament, John Cannon and Jake Runte were named to the Houston College Classic All-Tournament Team. Cannon finished the weekend 3-for-8 with a .375 average. He had a double, triple and four RBIs. Runte made three starts at left field, going 5-for-11 at the plate for a .454 average. He recorded three runs, a double, RBI and stolen base.
Through 11 games, Caleb Ramsey leads the team with a .395 batting average and a team-high five doubles and 13 RBIs.
RHP Dakota Dill will be making his first career start on Tuesday against McNeese State. He has made five appearances on the mound and posts a 1.08 ERA. In 8.1 innings, Dill has allowed just one run on nine hits with eight strikeouts.
The Cougars will name a starter for Wednesday's game after the McNeese State contest.
MCNEESE STATE
Houston opens the week against the McNeese State Cowboys on Tuesday. This will be the 56th overall meeting between the two programs, with the Cougars holding a 43-12 series record.
The last time these two teams met was in 2009. UH came away with two victories, including a 12-2 win at Cougar Field and a 6-3 win in Lake Charles, La.
The Cowboys enter the weekend with a 7-6 overall record. Lee Orr leads the team with a .420 batting average. He has five doubles, two triples and 12 RBIs.
McNeese State will start RHP Jaden Dillon on the mound Tuesday. Dillon is 0-2 in two starts with a 9.64 ERA. In 9.1 innings, he has allowed 11 runs with seven strikeouts.
TEXAS SOUTHERN
The Cougars continue the week against Texas Southern on Wednesday. The Tigers are 5-7 this season after going 1-2 over the weekend against Prairie View A&M. Anthony Dilligard leads the Tigers with a .391 batting average. He has two doubles, a triple, a home run and five RBIs.
Houston holds a perfect 22-0 record against Texas Southern in a series that dates back to 1987. The Cougars earned a 6-5 win in their last meeting in 2005.
UP NEXT
Houston will head to San Marcos, Texas, for a three-game series against Texas State March 11-13. The series will begin at 6:30 p.m. Friday, continue at 2 p.m. Saturday and conclude at 1 p.m. Sunday.
