Houston Tennis Falls to No. 48 Rice, 5-2

HOUSTON - The University of Houston tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to No. 48 Rice Saturday afternoon at John E. Hoff Courts. The Cougars fell to 2-2 overall and 0-1 in Conference USA play, while the Owls improved to 3-2 overall.
"I think it was a pretty good effort across the board, unfortunately we just came up a little short," said head coach John Severance. "I'm pleased with the way Giorgia (Pozzan) and Joanna (Kacprzyk) came back. We lost three straight doubles sets and that set us back early on, but hopefully we can come out tomorrow and do a lot better."
The Rice duo of Daniella Trigo and Jessica Jackson led off doubles play with an 8-1 victory over the Houston pair of Dionne Sanders and Jo Garvey at the No. 3 position, while the Cougar tandem of Bryony Hunter and Giorgia Pozzan fell at the top spot to Rebekka Hanle and Ana Guzman to drop the doubles point.
The Owls secured wins at the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 4 singles positions to jump out to a 4-0 lead and clinch the match.
Houston's Garvey claimed the first set over Trigo at the No. 5 spot before falling 6-2 in the second set and dropping the following tiebreaker, 10-7.
Pozzan and Kacprzyk highlighted play for the Cougars on Saturday with wins at the No. 3 and No. 6 singles positions, respectively.
Pozzan, a junior from Lacchiarella, Italy, dropped the first set to Jackson by a score of 6-1 before dominating the second and third sets, 6-0, 6-2. Pozzan increased her spring record to 2-1 and overall season record to 12-4.
Kacprzyk improved to a perfect 3-0 on the spring season with a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Anicete.
The Cougars look to get back in the win column as they play host to Sam Houston State at noon on Sunday.
