Cougar Tennis Outlasts Sam Houston State, 5-2

HOUSTON - The University of Houston tennis team topped Sam Houston State by a score of 5-2, Sunday afternoon at John E. Hoff Courts. The Cougars claimed their first home victory of the 2011 season to improve to 3-2 overall.
"It's never going to be great tennis with 15 mile per hour winds," said head coach John Severance. "We came out flat, but we prevailed and got the win. It wasn't pretty, but it was a win nonetheless. I'm happy with Jo (Garvey) picking up the clinching victory, and Giorgia (Pozzan) getting the win against her former team, which is always tough."
The freshman duo of Jo Garvey and Dionne Sanders led off doubles play with an 8-3 drubbing of Imke Jagau and Natalie Seira Petaia at the No. 3 position.
After a Houston loss at the No. 2 position, the Cougar tandem of Bryony Hunter and Giorgia Pozzan won a thrilling 9-8(4) decision over Tatyana Postnikova and Nadya Dubyanskaya at the top spot to claim the crucial opening point.
Maja Kazimieruk opened singles play with a 7-5, 6-0 victory over Sheridan Currie at the No. 4 position, while Celia Fraser claimed her first dual match victory as a Cougar over Jagau at the top position (6-3, 4-1, ret.).
The Bearkats snagged their first singles victory at the No. 3 spot to cut the Houston lead to 3-1 before Garvey clinched the match with a 7-6(6), 6-3 victory over Petaia at the bottom position.
Pozzan rounded out the scoring with a hard-fought 6-7(4), 6-3, 10-6 win over Postnikova at the No. 2 spot.
The Cougars return to action to host three matches next weekend, beginning with UT-Pan American at 2:00 p.m. on Feb. 11.
