HOUSTON - The University of Houston women's basketball team will look to remain undefeated in a battle at the top of the Conference USA standings Sunday at Tulane. Tip off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Fogelman Arena in New Orleans, La.
The Cougars have enjoyed a week off since improving to 8-0 in C-USA play on Jan. 30 in a come-from-behind victory over SMU. Houston overcame a six-point deficit with less than 30 seconds remaining, scoring 11 unanswered points to topple the Mustangs at Hofheinz Pavilion. All five Houston starters scored in double figures in the win, led by Porsche Landry's 16 points.
Courtney Taylor currently leads C-USA and ranks fifth nationally in rebounds per game (11.7), while placing third in the nation with 14 double-doubles. Taylor (15.8 ppg), Brittney Scott (15.4 ppg) and Landry (15.1 ppg) rank fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively, in scoring in C-USA, while Scott places second in the league in 3-point field goals per game (2.6).
Lesslee Mason earned her first career C-USA Player of the Week honor after averaging 13.0 points and 10.5 rebounds in Houston's victories over UCF and SMU last week. Mason ranks second in the league in blocks per game (2.1) and fourth in rebounds per game (8.9) and offensive rebounds per game (3.6).
As a team, Houston leads the league in scoring offense (74.5 ppg), rebounding (43.8 rpg), defensive rebounds (28.1 rpg) and field goal percentage defense (37.6), while ranking second in scoring margin (+7.8) and blocked shots (5.0 bpg).
ABOUT TULANE
The Green Wave are 17-5 overall and are currently in second place in C-USA with a 6-3 mark. Tulane is 10-3 at home this season, but have dropped two league contests inside Fogelman Arena.
Tulane leads C-USA in five statistical categories (scoring margin - +10.3, assists per game - 16.6, turnover margin - +5.2, blocks per game - 5.3, assist to turnover ratio - 1.1), while ranking second in field goal percentage (43.3) and third in scoring offense (72.4 ppg).
Five players are scoring in double figures for the Green Wave, while seven are averaging at least 8.0 points per game. Preseason C-USA pick Danielle Nunn leads Tulane with 14.9 points per game, while Tiffany Aidoo has added 13.9 points and leads the league with 62 made 3-pointers. Brett Benzio gives the Green Wave an intimidating inside presence, pacing Tulane with 7.5 rebounds and a league-leading 2.8 blocks per contest.
SERIES HISTORY
The Cougars and Green Wave will meet for the 28th time dating back to 1979, as Tulane holds a 17-10 advantage. The Cougars are 4-8 all time against the Green Wave in New Orleans.
Houston has won four straight against Tulane, including both contests last season over the C-USA regular season and tournament champions.
Porsche Landry capped off a 16-point second half with the go-ahead bucket with 10 seconds remaining as Houston escaped with a 70-68 victory at Tulane in the first meeting last season. The Cougars completed the sweep with a 74-62 victory at home, highlighted by Courtney Taylor's 10-point, 19-rebound performance.
