HOUSTON - The University of Houston baseball team lost its first game of the season, falling to Ole Miss 4-2 Friday night at Cougar Field.
"We didn't help things go our way because we didn't play our brand of baseball," head coach Todd Whitting said. "We need to understand that the pressure isn't on us but on the pitcher. Our guys played really hard but didn't come out of the game like we wanted to. We battled the entire game."
The Rebels jumped on the Cougars (4-1) early putting their leadoff batter, Tanner Mathis, on second base as a result of an error by third baseman Jake Runte. Alex Yarbrough would come to the plate and hit a double down the left field line to put Ole Miss up 1-0.
Ole Miss increased its lead 2-0 in the top of the second inning. With one out, Zach Kirksey singled to center field and scored on Mathis' sacrifice fly. The Rebels took their biggest lead of the contest, 3-0 in the top of the fourth, scoring Preston Overbey on Mathis' sac bunt.
The Cougars looked to make a comeback in the sixth inning. John Cannon, Landon Appling and Ryan Still led off the inning with two-straight singles and a sacrifice bunt to load the bases with no outs. Chase Jensen hit a ground ball to third base, scoring Cannon and keeping three baserunners on the bags for UH. Caleb Ramsey earned a bases loaded walk to pull the Cougars within one, 3-2, but David Murphy grounded out into a double play to end the inning.
The Rebels scored a final run in the seventh inning, plating Blake Newalu who led off the inning with a single to third base.
In his second career start, Codey Morehouse pitched five innings, allowing three runs on five hits while tying his career-high with six strikeouts. He falls to 1-1 on the season. Travis Jenkins turned in 2.1 innings of relief, allowing one run on three hits. Jordan Mannisto closed out the game, pitching 1.2 scoreless innings.
