HOUSTON - The University of Houston women's basketball team hits the road for a Thursday evening contest at Marshall. Tip off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. CT at Cam Henderson Center in Huntington, W.Va. The Cougars, who garnered a No. 25 national ranking in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches' Poll on Tuesday, will look to shatter a school record with their 14th-consecutive victory.
Houston (22-4, 13-0) clinched the Conference USA regular season title with a 77-61 win over UTEP on Sunday at Hofheinz Pavilion. Four players scored in double figures for Houston, led by Brittney Scott's game-high 23 points. Courtney Taylor posted 18 points and 10 rebounds in the second half for totals of 21 and 11, respectively, while Lesslee Mason added eight points and tied a career high with 15 boards.
Houston features three of the top five scorers in the league as Scott (15.7 ppg), Taylor (15.3 ppg) and Porsche Landry (15.2 ppg) rank third, fourth, and fifth, respectively. Taylor currently ranks fourth nationally with 17 double-doubles and leads C-USA and ranks sixth in the country in rebounds per game (11.6).
Houston leads C-USA in scoring (74.9 ppg), scoring margin (+9.5), rebounding (44.5 rpg), defensive rebounds (28.8 rpg) and field goal percentage defense (36.8), while ranking second in blocked shots (4.9 bpg) and third in turnover margin (+2.7) and free-throw percentage (69.3).
ABOUT MARSHALL
The Thundering Herd have won back-to-back contests against UAB and Tulsa to improve to 8-18 overall and 4-9 in C-USA play.
Marshall ranks 12th in the league in scoring at just 53.2 points per game, while placing sixth in C-USA in scoring defense, holding its opponents to 64.5 points per contest. The Thundering Herd are also stingy on the glass, ranking second in the conference by holding the opposition to just 35.8 rebounds per game.
Marshall is led by preseason all-conference pick Tynikki Crook, who ranks second in the league in scoring (16.7 ppg), fourth in rebounding (9.1 rpg) and seventh in field goal percentage (50.6).
SERIES HISTORY
The Cougars and Thundering Herd will meet for the sixth time since 2006, as Marshall holds a 4-2 advantage in the series. Houston and Marshall have split two meetings in Huntington, W.Va.
Houston dropped the lone contest to Marshall last season, falling 66-61 at Hofheinz Pavilion after holding a 42-23 lead at the half. Courtney Taylor registered a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Brittney Scott (16), Porsche Landry (15) and Lesslee Mason (14) also scored in double figures.
