HOUSTON - The University of Houston soccer team continues their spring schedule this weekend with the Challenge Cup at Burroughs Park. The Cougars face Baylor on Saturday at 11 a.m. and then play North Texas on Sunday at 3 p.m.
"The team is progressing really well this spring season," said head coach Susan Bush. "We performed well at our first tournament and are looking forward to full field matches on Saturday. We have three additions this spring to the fall roster and while we are lacking some depth with fall injuries, we are a talented group. The team understands that in order to continue raising the bar, we must be fit and competitive in every match, spring or fall."
With a young squad last year that featured only three seniors, this spring season will be pivotal as the Cougars progress. The young, talented squad will return 20 letter-winners from the 2010 team who finished with a program-best record of 12-5-4.
The 2010 squad was balanced in the attacking and defending zones as they were fourth place in goals scored and first in goals allowed among Conference USA teams. Senior Lauri Byrne was the leading goal scorer with eight and freshman Sami Sackos was second in goals with five. Freshman Cami Koski posted the lowest goals allowed average in UH history (0.63).
The Challenge Cup is hosted by the Challenge Soccer Club. Three freshman from the 2010 Houston team - Kylie Cook, Nicole Duarte and Danielle Munoz - from the soccer club. Kaci Bush and Morgan Vela are former Challenge Club teammates as well.
Burroughs Park is located at 9738 Hufsmith Road in Tomball, Texas.
