Houston, Texas -
Patrick Edwards, the University of Houston's record-breaking wide receiver, was named a semifinalist for the 2011 Fred Biletnikoff Award on Tuesday. The Tallahassee Quarterback Club Foundation, Inc. named Edwards one of ten semifinalists for the award, which is presented annually to the nation's top wide receiver.
Edwards is enjoying a spectacular senior season. The Hearne, Texas, native leads the country with 14 touchdown receptions and added a punt return TD last Thursday at Tulane. Edwards currently leads Conference USA in a number of statistical categories, including yards per game (127.7), all-purpose yards (142.7) and TD grabs (14). He also ranks No. 2 nationally in total receiving yardage (1,277) and yards per catch (20.9).
Edwards of course produced the top receiving day in the country on Oct. 27 vs. Rice, making seven grabs for 318 yards and five touchdowns. He tied the school record with those five scoring grabs and is the UH career leader in touchdown receptions (37) and career receiving yardage (4,034). Edwards also needs just 104 yards to become C-USA's all-time yardage leader for a receiver and is second all-time with his 37 TDs.
Voting for the three finalists will run Nov. 16-20. The presentation of the Biletnikoff Award will be featured on The Home Depot College Football Awards live on Dec. 8, at 8 p.m. CT on ESPN.
Edwards and the No. 10 Houston Football program return to action on Saturday afternoon vs. SMU. The game is a sellout and ESPN College GameDay will be live on the UH campus both Friday (Nov. 18) and Saturday (Nov. 19) from the Cullen Circle on the UH campus. The Cullen Circle will open at 4 a.m. on Saturday.
