HOUSTON - In a seven-part series, UHCougars.com will catch up with each of the seven newcomers of the University of Houston women's basketball squad prior to the start of the 2011-12 season.
UHCougars.com met with junior guard Tasha Tubbs on Thursday to discuss the upcoming season. Tubbs spent the last two seasons at Howard College in Big Spring, Texas, where she earned First Team All-Western Junior Athletic Conference honors.
Houston kicks off the 2011-12 campaign with an exhibition contest against St. Thomas on Nov. 7 and opens the regular season on Nov. 11 against New Mexico State at Hofheinz Pavilion.
UHCougars.com: What has been the biggest difference in preseason workouts at the Division I level?
Tasha Tubbs: "The conditioning is much faster. Even though junior college is faster than high school, this level is much more fast-paced."
UH: What's it like playing for Coach Buchanan?
TT: "I love it because he's more family oriented. I feel like I'm still back at home and I have someone I can call anytime I need something."
UH: How has the senior leadership been so far with so many new faces on the team?
TT: "Their leadership has been great. Rox (Button) is the same everyday and you know she's going to cheer us on. Porsche (Landry) is just going to show you on the court. If you're not doing what you're supposed to be doing, she's going to get on you until you get it right. (Michelle White) isn't going to yell at you, she's just going to handle her business and show you what you have to do to be a leader."
UH: Is there anything you're trying to improve in your game?
TT: "The worst part of my game is defense, so everyday I'm trying to get better."
UH: What are you most looking forward to about the upcoming season?
TT: "I think the traveling is going to be fun. I've never been on a plane and we're going to a lot of different places that I've never been before.
UH: How has the team chemistry been coming along with seven newcomers?
TT: "We have to build it on and off the court, but it starts on the court. We've tried to do team things off the court as well to help with the chemistry."
UH: What made you choose to attend the University of Houston?
TT: "When I was in high school, I wanted to live in Houston and since then it's been my dream. I finally got it."
