USTA/ITA Texas Regionals Weekend Recap

FORT WORTH, Texas - The University of Houston women's tennis team competed in its fourth tournament of the fall season this weekend at the USTA/ITA Texas Regionals in Fort Worth, Texas.
The Cougars got off to a slow start on Friday against tough competition from the top players in the state of Texas, but bounced back on Saturday and Sunday, claiming 12 of 16 matches in singles consolation play.
Houston senior Giorgia Pozzan improved to 7-0 on Friday in the opening round of the singles main draw with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over UTSA's Kavya Menon before suffering her first loss of the fall against 11th-seeded Noel Scott of Texas in three sets.
Freshmen Liselot Koenen and Charlotte Phillips highlighted play for Houston in the singles consolation draw, each claiming four wins to advance to the semifinals where the teammates will meet on Monday.
Koenen won the first two matches in straight sets over Annat Rabinovich of Texas and Mia Matuszak of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi before advancing to the quarterfinals after a walkover victory. The St. Charles, Ill., product claimed her fourth win with a 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(5) triumph over Texas A&M's Sheri Oliver.
Phillips, a native of Nottinghamshire, U.K., cruised through consolation play, dispatching opponents from Texas A&M, TCU, Rice and SMU in straight sets to advance to Monday's semifinals.
Dionne Sanders, Maja Kazimieruk and Jo Garvey also recorded wins in the singles consolation bracket.
After suffering a tough 9-8 defeat on Friday to a duo from Texas A&M, Houston's Bryony Hunter and Pozzan found success in the doubles consolation draw, defeating tandems from Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, TCU and Sam Houston State before getting edged in the finals by a score of 9-8 to Stephen F. Austin's seventh-seeded duo of Bekerova and Gordo.
The sophomore tandem of Garvey and Sanders also made a run in the doubles consolation draw, defeating opponents from UTPA and UTEP before falling in the quarterfinals.
Play at the USTA/ITA Texas Regionals will resume on Monday.
