HOUSTON - In a seven-part series, UHCougars.com will catch up with each of the seven newcomers of the University of Houston women's basketball squad prior to the start of the 2011-12 season.
UHCougars.com met with freshman guard Danielle Parks on Thursday to discuss the upcoming season. Parks attended St. Pius X High School in Houston and was a three-time TAPPS All-State selection.
Houston kicks off the 2011-12 campaign with an exhibition contest against St. Thomas on Nov. 7 and opens the regular season on Nov. 11 against New Mexico State at Hofheinz Pavilion.
UHCougars.com: What has been the difference so far in practices for high school and college?
Danielle Parks: "I would say the workouts, definitely. The intensity, the running, everything."
UH: What's it like playing for Coach Buchanan?
DP: "It's great. He's a great coach, on and off the court. He knows how to talk to you and if you need him, he's always there."
UH: How has the chemistry been so far with seven newcomers joining the team?
DP: "I think it's been great. It's really coming along. We're not there yet, but we're getting there gradually."
UH: What are you most looking forward to about the upcoming season?
DP: "Just to play with all the girls. Just to come out, give it our all, and play."
UH: What made you choose to attend the University of Houston?
DP: "Everything. The academics, the pharmacy program and Coach Buchanan. He's been recruiting me since his HBU (Houston Baptist) days, so I've always had that chemistry with him."
UH: What has been the biggest challenge so far in preseason practice?
DP: "For me, I would say the running because I've always been slow. I'm a guard and a post so I've always been in a mix of running guard and post, so it's been challenging."
