Pozzan Chalks Up Another Singles Title on Final Day

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Giorgia Pozzan highlighted a successful outing for the University of Houston tennis team Saturday by claiming her second-consecutive singles title in tournament play at the Roberta Allison Classic at the University of Alabama.
The Cougars also claimed two consolation titles on Saturday, going a perfect 4-0 on the final day of action in Tuscaloosa.
Pozzan met No. 2 seed Elja van Berlo of Southern Miss in the flight 3 finals, and routed the league foe by a score of 6-1, 6-1 to improve to an unbeaten 6-0 this season.
"Giorgia definitely stepped it up today and was lights out," head coach John Severance said. "I'm really proud of her winning another title."
Freshman Charlotte Phillips also posted an impressive outing in singles play, cruising past Jill Furlong of West Alabama by a score of 6-3, 6-1 to claim the flight 6 consolation title. Phillips, a native of Nottinghamshire, U.K., improved to 3-3 on the season.
"Charlotte finished the day with a convincing win to gain some more confidence heading into the ITA Regionals next weekend," Severance said.
In doubles play, the Houston duo of Pozzan and Bryony Hunter returned to their winning ways, earning two victories over tough competition to earn the flight 1 consolation title and improve to 14-7 together dating back to last season.
The Cougar tandem opened the day by edging Alabama's top duo of Toni Foehse and Emily Zabor, 9-8(2), and continued with an 8-3 rout over N.C. State's top team of Elisha Hande and Christy Sipes.
"The first win over Alabama was a hard fought match and it gave them confidence going into the second match," Severance said. "They're really starting to click and any team that plays them will have their hands full."
The Cougars return to action next weekend at the ITA Regionals in Fort Worth, Texas.
