HOUSTON - The University of Houston women's basketball team will look to tie its best-ever start in Conference USA play with a Thursday night contest at UAB. Tip off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. CT inside Bartow Arena in Birmingham, Ala.
The Cougars improved to 4-0 in C-USA play on Sunday with a 70-62 road victory over UTEP. Courtney Taylor registered her 51st-career double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds, while Brittney Scott (15), Lesslee Mason (12) and Porsche Landry (12) also scored in double figures. The Miners cut a once-15-point deficit down to two with less than five minutes to play before Landry stroked back-to-back 3-pointers to put the contest out of reach.
Taylor grabbed her 1,000th-career rebound at UTEP to become one of only two players in Houston history, and one of six all-time in C-USA, to post 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds. Taylor is just seven rebounds shy of the school record set by Vickey Finch (1,011).
Brittney Scott is also nearing a career milestone, draining three second-half 3-pointers on Sunday to close to within two treys of the all-time career record set by Houston great Chandi Jones (189).
The league's top offense will meet the top defense on Thursday, as Houston is scoring 74.5 points per game, while UAB is limiting its opponents to only 57.9 points per contest. The Cougars also pace C-USA in rebounding (44.1 rpg) and defensive rebounds (28.2 rpg), while ranking second in blocked shots (4.5 bpg) and scoring margin (+7.8).
ABOUT UAB
UAB is currently 9-8 overall and defeated Memphis in its last action to improve to 1-3 in Conference USA play. The Blazers had dropped five of six contests prior to defeating the Tigers on Sunday.
UAB only averages 58.5 points per game, but feature the league's top defense, allowing only 57.9 points per contest. The Blazers are forcing 19.6 turnovers on 9.4 steals per game.
Amber Jones leads the team off the bench with 10.4 points per game, while LaShuanda Pratt and Amanda Peterson have chipped in 8.2 points apiece. Peterson, one of only six active 1,000-point scorers in C-USA, ranks third in the league in 3-point field goals per game (2.3) and seventh in 3-point percentage (36.8).
SERIES HISTORY
The Cougars and Blazers will meet for the 21st time since 1989, as the two teams have split the series with 10 wins apiece. Houston has won four straight in Birmingham for a 4-5 all-time record.
Houston had won three-consecutive contests against UAB before falling to the Blazers by a score of 60-55 in the C-USA Tournament semifinals last season. The Cougars edged UAB on the road last year, 63-62.
Courtney Taylor and Brittney Scott have averaged 13.8 and 11.3 points, respectively, in their careers against UAB, while Lesslee Mason averaged 11.5 points and 10.0 rebounds in two meetings against the Blazers last season.
UP NEXT
The Cougars return home to play host to Memphis on Sunday at noon at Hofheinz Pavilion in a nationally-televised contest on CBS College Sports. The game is designated as Student Appreciation Day, as the first 100 students will receive a free Houston Basketball t-shirt.
