HOUSTON - The University of Houston softball team hosted the second annual Cougar Softball Camp in West University Saturday.
More than 100 girls ranging from 6-12 years of age came out for the second annual West U Cougar Softball Camp. The clinic was free and open to all registered West U players in the freshman, intermediate, sophomore and junior divisions. Despite the chilly and sometimes rainy weather, the turnout was fantastic.
The team was on hand to direct pitching, hitting and fielding drills, and split the afternoon into two sessions. The first was geared toward the younger players and the second toward the older group. Although the Cougars just completed their first week of practice and conditioning, they were instrumental in putting on an enjoyable day for everyone involved.
The West U Softball Association showed its support for the program in more ways than inviting the team out to host Saturday's camp. The association also purchased 500 group tickets for the LSU game on Feb. 20.
"I want to thank the girls for making it a great day after dealing with a long week of cold and rain," head coach Kyla Holas said. "I also want to thank Greg Brungardt (Assistant Director for Marketing, Promotions and Sales) for putting together a win-win situation with West U and creating this deal."
Holas and her staff also oversaw the two-hour coaching clinic that kicked off the Saturday morning.
"Our whole program really appreciates the relationship with have with West U," Holas said. "I'm excited to see all of them in the stands against LSU."
Houston opens the season Feb. 11 against Michigan on the first day of the Houston Hilton Plaza Invitational.
