HOUSTON - The University of Houston hosted the Leonard Hilton Invitational Friday evening and three Cougars earned first place from the competition. The men finished in second place with 112 points and the women came in third at 81 points.
"This was s a tune-up for us," said head coach Leroy Burrell. "We didn't run many events or make many of our athletes double up in events so that makes it difficult to score a lot of points. We had some really good performances like DeMeeka Jones and Kevin Furlough. There was a good showing in the pole vault and some other field events. "
"We'll get back in the swing of things on Monday and head up to Nebraska to try and qualify."
For the second meet, UH was tops in the pole vault competition in both the men's and women's events. Alex Bentley cleared 5.05m/16-6.75 and Karley King vaulted 3.70m/12-1.50.
Lamar Delaney took first place in the long jump with his leap of 7.21m/23-8.00.
Joseph Irabor and Jeffery Thomas finished 1-2 in the 200m dash. Irabor finished in 22.46 and Thomas set a new personal best at 22.49.
Several Cougars finished as the runner-up to unattached runners including DeMeeka Jones in the 60m hurdles (8.54) as she set a new personal best. Whitney Harris also took second to an unattached runner in the 60m dash with her 7.44 finish, nearly tying her personal best at 7.41.
Doug Kelley was the top 400m collegiate runner as he placed third in 48.95.
