HOUSTON - The University of Houston women's tennis team not only enjoyed a successful fall campaign on the court, but in the classroom as well, posting the highest GPA of all 11 sports programs.
Six Cougars posted a GPA of 3.0 or better, including freshman Celia Fraser, who earned a spot on the Dean's List with a 4.0 GPA in pre-pharmacy. As a team, the Cougars earned a program-best 3.26 GPA.
"I'm proud of the hard work and for passing 14.6 hours, which is a large amount," said head coach John Severance. "One of our goals is to have a 3.5 GPA as a team, so we fell a little short, but 3.26 is still very good. I expect every player in our program to graduate with over a 3.0 GPA. That's a tradition we've set since I've been here. Academics is very important to our team, and obviously it shows."
The Cougars open the 2011 spring season at No. 3 Baylor on Jan. 21, and host the first match at John E. Hoff Courts on Feb. 4 against St. Edward's.
