HOUSTON - The University of Houston softball team hit the books for a record-breaking semester in the classroom this fall.
Six Cougars were named to the Dean's List following the Fall 2010 semester, an award given only to those posting a 3.5 GPA or higher. Additionally, six more student-athletes recorded a GPA of 3.0 or better to put two-thirds of the team in the 3.0 or better GPA range. As a team, the Cougars earned a 3.19 GPA, the highest GPA for a semester in program history.
"This is something we've been preaching for a long time," head coach Kyla Holas said. "This is also something that our administration is very focused on, and we've expressed that to our team. I'm glad that they've responded so well. We definitely want to thank Lori Selzer (Assistant Director, Academic Center for Excellence), who has a big part in our academic success."
Amanda Crabtree, Jennifer Klinkert, Angela Spittler, Melissa Gregson, Sydney Gerbracht and Haley Outon represent softball on the Dean's List this fall. Katy Beth Sherman stands out as the only graduate student on the squad. Although graduate students are not eligible for Dean's List recognition, Sherman holds a 3.66 GPA after her first semester of working toward her Master of Science in Human Resource Development.
Houston will open the season with back-to-back tournaments at Cougar Softball Stadium. The Cougars are slated to face Michigan in their first game of the Houston Hilton Plaza Invitational on Feb. 11.
