New Orleans, La. - The University of Houston volleyball team won its first Conference USA match Sunday afternoon with a 3-0 (25-22, 25-23, 25-23) sweep of Tulane at Fogelman Arena.
With the win the Cougars improve to 7-8 and 1-2 in C-USA.
"We played a composed and solid match today," head coach Molly Alvey said. "Even though the scores were close, we remained in control and finished the match."
"Today mental preparation played a key. I don't know if we prepared differently or didn't prepare enough yesterday but there was a clear change in the mental approach of the team today. We also did a better job adjusting to the block and we came up with points at the end to finish each set."
Chandace Tryon led the Cougars to the win with 15 kills, four digs and three blocks. Amanda Carson added nine digs and three aces. Ingrida Zauere was two kills away from a second-straight double-double, finishing with eight kills and 11 digs.
"Chandace continues to play incredibly consistent," Alvey added. "Her play is by no means flashy but she gets the job done and with her consistency we can build on her play and take it to the next level. She has done a great job."
UH struggled in the early going of the match, trailing 13-8, forcing Alvey called her first timeout of the afternoon. Off the bench, the Cougars would battle back and eventually tie the score at 17-17 before pulling ahead and taking the win, 25-22.
Tulane scored the first three points of the second set, but the Cougars stormed back and took an 11-9 lead, prompting a timeout from the Tulane bench. As play resumed, Houston held on to the lead until the Green Wave came back to knot the set 23-23. Needing two points for the win, Tryon gave UH a 24th point with a kill and Zauere ended the set with a service ace.
Houston could close out the afternoon with a win, but they would need a victory in the third set. They used that momentum to take an 18-15 lead in the final set and, despite only winning by two points, sail to a 25-23 victory.
