HOUSTON - The Houston Cougars soccer team beat UTSA 3-1 to improve to 5-2-1 Sunday afternoon in San Antonio. The Cougars rallied from a 0-1 deficit at halftime and scored three goals in the second frame to earn the win in their final non-conference match before Conference USA play begins.
"We played very good soccer today," head coach Susan Bush said. "We played very good soccer and were very successful in executing movement off the ball."
Two minutes before the end of the first half, the Roadrunners struck first and took a 1-0 lead into the locker room. The Cougars came out of the break and their adjustments led to a dominating second half performance.
"We really controlled the ball and the game in the second half. We had lots of opportunities to finish on goal and we capitalized on them."
After allowing just five shots in the first frame, the Houston defense allowed only three shots in the second half and none of them required a save from Cami Koski who earned her third win of the season.
The equalizing goal for Houston came courtesy of an own goal by UTSA in the 51st minute.
Five minutes later, Lauri Byrne placed a header off a corner kick for the game winning goal. It was Byrne's team-leading fourth goal and she is now tied for the eighth most career goals in Houston history with 11 (Ashley Fortenberry and Courtney Gaines).
The Cougars kept up their high pressure attacking style and continued to pile on the shots with 14 in the second half and nine of those were on goal.
Jessica Zavalza added the final point when she scored off Kaitlin Thulin's cross at the top of the penalty box. It was Zavalza's first goal and Thulin's first assist of the year.
It was a physical contest with 35 total fouls and five cautions. Two yellow cards were issued to Houston players cards while UTSA was forced to play with only nine players in the field in the second half after Stephanie Ogilvie picked up her second yellow of the match.
