Volleyball Looks To Continue Win Streak At 2010 Nicholls Challenge

HOUSTON - The University of Houston volleyball team takes a two-match win streak into its final weekend of the non-conference schedule at the 2010 Nicholls Challenge, Sept. 10-11.
Houston opens tournament play against Louisiana Tech on Friday at 3 p.m., continuing against Nicholls State at noon on Saturday and concluding against Southeastern Louisiana at 2 p.m.

Houston takes a 3-6 record into the tournament after knocking off BYU and Loyola Marymount in the final two matches of the BYU Molten Classic last weekend. Lucy Charuk paces the Cougars with 98 kills and 41 blocks. Her 1.28 blocks per set also ranks 39th in NCAA rankings. Amber Brooks also leads the team with 312 assists and Amanda Carson has a team-high 154 digs.
Louisiana Tech, the Cougars' first opponent this weekend, enters the tournament with a 7-4 record, having won its last four matches. Taylor Fritz leads the team with 100 kills, while Kara Jones has a team-high 25 blocks. UH is undefeated in the series against the Lady Techsters, having won the last meeting 3-2 in 2002.
The tournament will continue on Saturday against host, Nicholls State. It marks just the third meeting between the two schools and the tiebreaker in a series that stands at 1-1. The Colonels hold a 7-3 record, including a four match win streak. Jennifer Brandt paces the team with 110 kills and Danielle Daigle has a team leading 199 digs.
The final match of the weekend will feature a meeting with Southeastern Louisiana, who the Cougars knocked off during the opening weekend of the season in 2009. The Lions are 7-5 this season, led by Allison Jones' 94 kills and Arianne Cruckshank's 211 assists.
UP NEXT
Following the Nicholls Challenge, Houston will return home to open the Conference USA season against Rice on Sept. 21. The match is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
