HOUSTON - The University of Houston volleyball team began the final day of the BYU Molten Classic with a 3-2 (19-25, 25-16, 25-17, 19-25, 15-13) win over BYU on Saturday afternoon.
Four Cougars recorded double-digit kills in the win. Lucy Charuk led the effort with 14 kills and seven blocks. Ingrida Zauere added 12 kills and 10 digs, while Stephanie Nwachukwu and Chandace Tryon each had 11 kills. Amber Brooks contributed 47 assists and Amanda Carson had 26 digs.
Krysta DeAngelis also had five digs but the intangibles that she brought to the match are what impressed head coach Molly Alvey.
"Krysta (DeAngelis) was a game changer," Alvey said. "She stepped into the match, nailed serving zones and made some crucial digs. From there as a team our confidence increased dramatically on serving. We played extremely well as a team with everyone contributing."
The Cougars fell behind early in the first set, trailing 17-12, before Alvey called a timeout to gather her team. Out of the break, Houston scored three of the next four points to pull within three at 18-15. BYU then put together a 7-4 run to close out the set and take a 25-19 win.
UH came off the bench strong in the second set, taking a 6-3 lead. The momentum continued in the Cougars favor, as they built an 18-9 lead before BYU was charged with a yellow card for delay of game. Houston continued to dominate the set and would go on to even the match with a 25-16 win.
Houston jumped out a 10-5 lead in the third set, but BYU was able to battle back within two, 13-11, forcing a Cougar timeout. Out of the break, however, Houston was not going to be denied the win as they would go on to take a 2-1 lead in the match, winning the third set 25-17.
BYU would even the match, winning the fourth set 25-19, and force a fifth set. It was the second five-set match for Houston in as many weeks. Last week, they fell to Oklahoma in the fifth set at the Houston Invitational but this weekend would be a different story. Despite a tie score at 10-10, Houston would pull away and record the win, 15-13.
With the victory over BYU, Houston improves to 2-6 on the season.
