HOUSTON - The University of Houston softball coaching staff spent all day on Cougar Softball Field working with each player as individual practices began Thursday.
Head coach Kyla Holas and assistant coach Abbie Sims began working with individual groups at 9 a.m. Thursday morning. The staff used the time to start introducing the program's language and work ethic to the six newcomers, while evaluating the returning players' improvement during their summer seasons.
"The returners are even more excited than the newcomers to be out here," Holas said. "The newcomers are still a little nervous, but that's why we're out here - to get them prepared."
The Cougar hitters spent time in the cages, focused on tee work and took soft toss while receiving directions and guidance from Holas. The pitching staff threw under Sims' supervision, narrowing in on release points, technique and getting to know one another.
"It's so important for me to get started so I can start learning the coaches and have the chance to show them what a freshman can do," freshman pitcher Diedre Outon said.
Ranging in size from two to four players, each group was scheduled for 30-minute practice slots with the coaches while making time for warm-ups and hitting in the cages on their own.
The Cougars are scheduled to begin individual practices each day at 9 a.m. and wrap up at approximately 2:30 p.m. each day.
