HOUSTON - University of Houston women's basketball head coach Todd Buchanan announced the commitment of Michelle White on Tuesday. The 5-foot-8 guard will join the Cougars for the upcoming 2010-11 season and becomes the first player to sign a National Letter of Intent since Buchanan took the reigns of the program in April.
"I'm extremely excited to have Michelle join our Cougar basketball family," Buchanan said. "She brings a versatile skill set to our team that will help us tremendously in strengthening our guard corps and our overall depth."
White, a native of New Haven, Conn., comes to Houston after spending last season playing for Trinity Valley Community College. During her time in Athens, Texas, she helped the Lady Cards finish with a 30-7 record that included Region XIV regular season and tournament championships and a sixth-place finish in the NJCAA National Tournament.
During the 2009-10 campaign, White played in 36 games and averaged 7.7 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.6 assists while also contributing more than a steal per contest. A steady shooter, she compiled a .342 percentage from 3-point range and converted 72 percent of her free throw attempts.
Prior to TVCC, White played one season at Barton County Community College in Great Bend, Kan., where she helped lead the team to a 25-7 record in 2008-09. During the season, she contributed 7.7 points per game and dished out 106 assists in 28 contests.
She attended Hillhouse High School in her hometown New Haven, Conn.
White joins a trio of incoming freshman in Alexandra Henderson (6-foot-2 / Guard / Euless, Texas), Mae Woods (6-foot-4 / Post / Maple Ridge, British Columbia) and Breana Williams (5-foot-8 / Guard / Memphis, Tenn.) who committed to the Cougars in November.
