HOUSTON - The University of Houston softball team placed three athletes on the 2010 All-Conference teams, as selected by the Conference USA coaches.
Freshman Reina Gaber was selected as the All-C-USA Second Team utility player as well as being honored on the All-Freshman team. Gaber started 43 games this year and carried the second highest batting average (.325) on the team and the 14th best in conference. The Whittier, Calif. native raised her level of play during conference games by hitting at a .348 clip. Gaber was also named the C-USA Co-Hitter of the Week for April 5-11 following her 8-for-14, nine RBI performance against Prairie View A&M and Memphis.
Freshmen Ashleigh Jones and Bailey Watts join Gaber on the All-Freshman team. Jones started all 53 games at center field this year and had the fourth most hits and the ninth highest batting average in the conference. She led the Cougars in batting average (.333), hits (59) and triples (4). Jones set a single-game UH record by recording two triples against East Carolina.
Watts made her freshman debut in impressive fashion by pitching a three-hit shutout of No. 22 Ohio State in the first game of the season. The right-hander from Spring Branch, Texas led the Cougars in ERA (2.86), starts (24), innings pitched (156.2), complete games (20) and shutouts (5). Watts threw a no-hitter against Memphis April 10 and was named C-USA Pitcher of the Week following her performance.
Gaber, along with Watts and Jones, join current teammates Melissa Gregson (2009) and Jennifer Klinkert (2008) as fellow C-USA All-Freshman honorees. Three All-Freshman selections is the most by a Cougar squad since 2002 when Kristen Glowacz, Kim Nesloney and Jenilee Skender were all named to the squad.
