HOUSTON - For the sixth consecutive season under head coach John Severance, the University of Houston tennis team has collected double digit victories, improving to 10-6 this season with a 7-0 victory over St. Edward's Monday at John E. Hoff Courts.
"The good thing is that we are better than we were a month ago," Severance said. "The downside, however, is that we still not where we need to go and have only a few weeks before the Conference USA Tournament. It's going to take a collective effort to transition our skills from practice to the competition court."
The Cougars won two of three doubles matches to earn the afternoon's first points as UH got wins from the teams of Laura Ring and Elena Kazakova at No. 1 and Joanna Kacprzyk and Maja Kazimieruk in the No. 3 match.
During singles action, the Cougars dominated the Hilltoppers by winning all six matches while not dropping a set along the way.
At the No. 1 singles position, freshman Bryony Hunter improved to 11-4 in singles action by defeating SEU's Paige Rachel 6-1, 6-0. In the No. 2 match, Ring earned a 7-5, 6-1 win while Kacprzyk was a 6-0, 6-1 winner at the No. 3 spot.
Kazakova earned a 6-2, 6-2 victory at the No. 4 singles match over Elizabeth Jacobi while Kazimieruk and Pickerill were also straight set winners at the No. 5 and No. 6 matches, respectively.
