HOUSTON - University of Houston track and field head coach Leroy Burrell will be inducted into the Penn Relays Wall of Fame, it was announced Friday by Carnival officials.
Burrell's accomplished history at the Relays extended from his days as a Penn Wood High School student-athlete to a collegiate record holder as a Houston Cougar. The Lansdowne, Penn., native set and held the meet record in the men's 100m dash for more than 10 years.
"I'm very proud to be inducted into the Hall of Fame," Burrell said. "It's a big honor especially to be close to home because my family is here to experience this with me. To have held the meet record for so long says a lot because there are so many great athletes that compete at the Relays each year. I'm very excited and am honored to receive this."
Burrell joins three individuals - John Marshall of Villanova, Pat Walsh of Tennessee and Joe McCluskey of Fordham - and four relay teams as the 2010 Penn Relays Wall of Fame inductees.
A banquet will be held Friday night in tribute of the newly named members, and on Saturday, the men's 100m championship final will be held in Burrell's honor to commemorate the induction.
Burrell is no stranger to prestigious accolades as he was named to the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame in recognition of his career as a world-class sprinter and collegiate coach in 2008.
