HOUSTON - The University of Houston track and field team heads to the historic 116th running of the Penn Relays this Thursday, looking to carry over the success the team has had this season. The competition begins Thursday with both the running and field events scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. and carries over to Saturday.
Beginning in 1895, this competition is the oldest and longest-running uninterrupted meet in the United States.
The Cougars hope to continue the success they had at the LSU Alumni Gold Invitational where the squad notched 13 top-five finishes with ten personal records set.
Junior Christie Jones proved to be the fastest woman at the competition, winning the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.90. The Katy, Texas native fell short of her personal best of 11.52, but looks to earn the gold at the Penn Relays.
Senior Daryl Cloud takes his silver-medal time of 14.71 in the 110-meter hurdles, from the LSU Gold meet, in to this competition. The Houston, Texas product fell just short of his personal record time in this event, which he set earlier this year.
Senior Brittani Williams looks to throw the javelin farther than her third-place distance of 43.90m (144-00), set last weekend, while her teammate, sophomore Tai'shea Reese, will try and jump longer than her second place mark of 6.08m (19-11.50).
The Cougars had much success in last year's Penn Relays and have two returning top-5 competitors and two top-notch relay teams returning to this meet. Senior Lamar Delaney placed third in last year's collegiate triple jump with a regional qualifying mark of 15.23m (49-11.75). Junior Chris Carter placed fourth in last year's triple jump championships, leaping to a distance of 16.23m (53-03.00), which set a NCAA regional qualifying mark as well.
The women's 4x200-meter relay team finished fifth, racing to a time of 1:33.50. Three of the four members of this squad, senior Quin'shundolyn McPherson, Jones and sophomore Whitney Harris, return to this meet looking to be victorious over the field.
