HOUSTON - A slow-moving rain storm in the Houston area and considerations for UAB travel arrangements conspired to rain out the University of Houston tennis' season finale Sunday at the UH Rec Courts. Played was stopped with the Cougars and Blazers tied at 3-3 during the doubles portion of the day's match.
"It was encouraging today that during the start of the doubles matches we were controlling the play and that hasn't happened in a while," head coach John Severance said. "I think our girls feel a little better after today since they had a chance to beat UAB, which has beaten some good teams in our league. If we play well in doubles we have a chance beat anybody in the conference."
Houston ends the regular season with an 11-7 overall record and will have to wait to learn its seed for the upcoming Conference USA Championship, which takes place in Tulsa, Okla., April 22-25.
Sunday's competition began with the singles portion of the event where the Cougars earned the first point of the day when freshman Bryony Hunter defeated Evelien Strijker 6-3, 6-3 in the top singles match.
Houston found itself with a 2-1 lead after junior Elena Kazakova won the No. 6 singles match 6-2, 6-1 over Richole Berger, but classmate Laura Ring fell to UAB's Paula Alvarez 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 2 match.
The Blazers were able to take a 3-2 advantage in the match after collecting wins at the No. 3 and No. 5 matches, but UH's Maja Kazimieruk defeated Brittany DeFelice 7-6, 6-3 during the No.4 match to even the score 3-3.
Following the singles matches, the contest went to the doubles portion of the match where Houston jumped out to a commanding 3-0 lead in the top doubles match. Houston was also leading 2-1 at No. 2 and tied 1-1 in the No. 3 match before playing conditions deteriorated due to rain and officials called a delay.
Following a delay of close to an hour and with rain still falling, both coaches agreed to call the match.
