HOUSTON - After a rain delay that lasted more than two hours, the University of Houston baseball team recovered from a 4-3 deficit and knocked off the Memphis Tigers, 8-6, Sunday afternoon at Cougar Field.

Houston improves to 16-18 on the season and 4-5 in Conference USA. The Cougars are now 35-9 all-time against the Tigers, including a 20-1 mark on their home field.

Blake Kelso led the Cougars finishing 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Zak Presley added a 2-for-3 performance with a run scored.

On the mound, James Conlee earned his first career win, pitching two innings, allowing one hit with a strikeout. Codey Morehouse earned the save, pitching the final third of the game.

With two outs, Houston scored their first run of the contest in its first at bat. Joel Ansley singled to center field and scored on M.P. Cokinos double to right field.

Memphis answered scoring a single run in the top of the second. Phillip Chapman earned a leadoff walk and scored on Drew Martinez's groundout to shortstop.

Codey Morehouse doubled to center field to lead off the fourth inning. Presley's sacrifice bunt moved him to third and Travis Trial walked to put two Cougar runners on base. Caleb Ramsey plated Morehouse on a sacrifice bunt to the pitcher and Kelso's single through the middle gave UH the 3-1 lead.

With two outs and a runner on base, Phillip Chapman hit a two-run home run over the left field fence to tie the game, 3-3. At the conclusion of the inning, rain moved into the area and forced a 2:19 minute rain delay.

Out of the break, Memphis took their first lead of the contest, scoring a single run in the top of the sixth inning. But the Cougars answered with a four run output in the bottom of the inning. Presley led off with a single to left field and Ryan Still reached base on an error by the Memphis pitcher. Ramsey then hit the Cougars third double of the contest to plate both runners. Kelso followed that up with a single through the middle to send in Ramsey before scoring on Ansley's triple to center field.

Leading 7-4, Houston posted a single run in the eighth inning when Kelso scored on a Cokinos single through the middle.

The Tigers tried to make a game of it, scoring two run in the ninth inning but the Cougars were able to hold off the comeback to earn the 2-1 series win.

UP NEXT
Houston begins a five-game road stand on Wednesday when they travel to Lamar for a 6:30 p.m. game. The Cougars will then play a three game series at Southern Miss on April 23-25. An April 27 contest at Sam Houston State will close out the road stand.
