Baseball Takes Series Opener From Memphis, 10-7

HOUSTON - Codey Morehouse hit a home run to lead off the fourth inning and propelled the Cougars to a 10-7 win over Memphis Friday night at Cougar Field.
Morehouse finished the game 3-for-5 with a run scored and a career-high four RBIs. In addition to his home run, Morehouse recorded his second double of the year and plated two runs with a single up the middle in the eighth inning.
Zak Presley added a 3-for-4 performance at the plate with four runs scored and Joel Ansley finished with two hits and three RBIs.
Eric Brooks earned the pitching win, turning in three innings of relief with four hits and two unearned runs. Chase Dempsay and Matt Creel combined to pitch three shutout innings to close the game while striking out three batters. Taylor Hammack earned the start going three innings, allowing five runs with a strikeout.
Houston improves to 15-17 on the year and 3-4 in league action while the Tigers drop to 15-19 and 5-5 in Conference USA.
The Cougars gave up back-to-back bunts to open the contest and Drew Martinez scored the first run of the game off Tyler Huelsing's single up the middle. Blake Kelso set up the Cougars' three runs in the bottom of the inning, reaching base on an error by the Memphis third baseman. Presley followed with a single through the middle and Anlsey tied the contest with his RBI single. M.P. Cokinos reached on a second Tiger error, which plated Presley and gave UH the 2-1 lead. The Tigers recorded a third error in the inning that put Morehouse on base and extended Houston's lead, 3-1.
Memphis pulled within one, 3-2, scoring a single run in the third and a five-run fourth inning gave the Tigers a 7-3 lead.
UH battled back, however, scoring a single run in each of the next two Cougar innings. Morehouse started the comeback with his leadoff home run in the fourth and Presley scored off Cokinos' single to right field after a leadoff single to open the bottom of the fifth inning.
Houston took control of the lead for good in the sixth inning. With two outs, Travis Trial singled to right center and eventually scored on an error in the Memphis outfield. Kelso and Presley notched back-to-back singles and scored on Ansley's triple to left center to take the 8-7 lead.
The scoring continued as Kelso led off the eighth inning, reaching base on an error by the Memphis second baseman and Presley followed that up reaching on a hit by pitch. Ansley moved the pair a base with a sacrifice bunt before Cokinos was intentionally walked to load the bases. Morehouse the plated the final two Cougar runs with his single through the middle.
UP NEXT
The series against Memphis will continue on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. with the finale scheduled for a 1 p.m. start on Sunday. Fans should note that all tickets to Saturday's game will be on sale for $3 for Fill The Field Night at Cougar Field.
