Track and Field Heads to LSU Alumni Gold Invitational

HOUSTON - The University of Houston track and field team is set to compete in the LSU Alumni Gold Invitational in Baton Rouge, La., this Friday and Saturday, April 16-17, at the Bernie Moore Track Stadium.
The meet begins Friday, with only the discus event to be held. Saturday will complete the rest of the events, with the field events beginning at 9 a.m. and the running events beginning at 11 a.m.
The Cougars look to extend their successes of previous tournaments into this upcoming invitational. The team has finished in the top-10 36 times in the last two meets. In the Sun Angel Classic, the Cougars had15 top-10 performances with eight of these finished being personal records. In the Mesa Classic, the team had 22 top-10 performances, four of which were for the gold.
Sophomore Ciera Johnson will look to improve on her gold medal time in the 800m at the Sun Angel Classic, while junior Jasmine Trier strives for another gold in the 3,000m steeplechase after being victorious in the Mesa Classic. Senior Brittani Williams will attempt to improve on both her javelin throw and her discus throw, both of which have been excellent on the year. This Houston, Texas native has already won gold in the discus and set the fourth-farthest throw of the javelin in school history.
Two men won at the Mesa Classic this past weekend. Sophomore D'Korian Ford won the 400m-hurdles event with a time of 51.98. Freshman Cameron LaCour was victorious in the 110m hurdles, with both Ford and senior Darryl Cloud in the top-5 behind him.
In last years LSU Alumni Gold Invitational, the Cougars set four regional qualifying marks. Returning for more is sophomore Whitney Harris, who ran a regional qualifying mark in the 400m, junior Chris Carter hopes to defend his No.1 spot in the long jump, while senior Lamar Delaney looks to be victorious, finishing second last year. Junior Kalyn Floyd looks to improve her regional qualifying mark from the competition in the 200m dash. Senior Quin'shundoyn McPherson hopes to jump farther than her regional qualifying mark she set in the previous meet.
