Women's Tennis Falls to Southern Miss

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The University of Houston tennis team came up short Friday, falling at Southern Miss 7-0 during its first conference match of the season.
"I am always disappointed with any loss, but a conference loss is very disappointing," said Coach John Severance.
Houston lost the doubles point as USM took all three matches to go up 1-0. Juniors Elena Kazakova and Laura Ring lost to Elja and Vroni van Berlo, 8-2 in the No. 1 spot. Freshmen Maja Kazimieruk and Bryony Hunter fell at the No. 2 spot, 8-2, to Stephanie Dellocono and Lauren Gutterman while USM finished strong in the No. 3 spot, as Senior Neila Starratt and Junior Joanna Kacprzyk lost to Zoe Lee and Shannon Rogers, 8-3.
USM continued where it left off, as the Golden Eagles took control of the singles matches. At the No. 1 spot, Hunter lost to Vroni van Berlo, 6-3, 6-3 and Kazakova fell to Dellocono 6-3 6-2, at the No. 2 spot. In the No. 3 singles match Elja van Berlo defeated Kacprzyk in a hard fought contest, 4-6, 6-4, 10-5, while Kazimieruk lost to Gutterman 7-5, 6-2, at the No. 4 spot.
Ring played Lee at the No. 5 position, but fell 6-7, 6-3, 11-9, and at the No. 6 spot, Neila Starratt went down to Rogers 7-6, 6-4
The Cougars face New Orleans tomorrow at 10 a. m. where they will be looking to bounce back and improve on their 4-2 record.
