Button Named to Conference USA All-Academic Team

HOUSTON - After earning ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District honors last month, University of Houston sophomore guard Roxana Button has garnered another accolade for her hard work in the classroom as Thursday she was selected to Conference USA All-Academic Team.
The Coppell, Texas, native carries a 3.92 GPA as a biology major and plans to attend medical school upon graduation. Button's efforts in the classroom also earned her the C-USA Academic Medal and Honor Roll, while being selected to the UH Dean's Honor Roll each of her three semesters. Button has compiled a season total 66 rebounds, 26 assists and 20 steals and was named to the Coors Rocky Mountain All-Tournament Team after scoring a career-high 21 points.
In her last two games, Button has come on strong for the Cougars, leading the team with a 14.5 point per game average in a pair of Houston wins.
Joining Button on the team were Tara Watts of Rice, Amandad Peterson of UAB, Kim Gay of ECU Alice Severin of SMU and Tiffani Couisnard of Tulsa.
Watts earns her third consecutive honor this season as a psychology major. The senior is a four-time C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll member and was named the 2009 Rice Scholar Athlete of the Year. The Surrey, British Columbia native owns a 3.41 GPA and is a two-time Rice Honor Athlete. On the hardwood, Watts leads Rice with 46 3-pointers made this season to rank third in school history with 144.
Peterson of UAB also makes a repeat appearance to the all-academic squad. The exercise science major holds a 3.60 GPA and is a two-time member of the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll. Peterson was named the UAB student-athlete of the week on Dec. 9 and was a C-USA Academic Medal recipient in 2009. The Homewood, Ala., native ranks second in school history with 200 treys made and stands at No. 2 in C-USA with 2.7 per game.
Rounding out the 2010 All-Academic squad are, Severin and Couisnard. Gay earns her first C-USA All-Academic team honor as a business student. The junior forward is a two-time C-USA Commissioner Honor Roll member who owns a 3.38 GPA. The Eastman, Ga., native leads ECU in rebounding and earned Most Valuable Player honors at the Lady Pirate Invitational.
Severin carries a 3.71 GPA in psychology, while also proving her strengths on the court. The Allen, Texas native ranks third in C-USA in three-point field goal percentage (.423), fifth in overall field goal percentage (.525) and third in total blocked shots (35). Couisnard also majors in psychology and owns a 3.75 GPA. The sophomore forward has played in 25 games with nine starts. She tallied her first double-double with 11 points and 15 rebounds against Central Arkansas.
The GMC Sierra 2010 C-USA Women's Basketball Championship will begin Monday, March 8, inside the Donald W. Reynolds Center on the campus of The University of Tulsa. The quarterfinal games are on Tuesday with the semi-final games scheduled for Wednesday and championship play on Friday.
