HOUSTON - The University of Houston tennis team defeated Southeastern Louisiana by the score of 5-2 Wednesday at John E. Hoff Courts to improve its record this spring to an impressive 4-1.
"There were parts of today's match where we really had to grind out points, but that is the great thing about college tennis," head coach John Severance said. "This could been a nail-biter but it was a solid 5-2 win and I'm proud of our girls for that."
The Cougars started the match off on the right foot by taking the doubles point, winning at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots. Juniors Elena Kazakova and Joanna Kacprzyk teamed up to beat Audrey Chelini and Morgane Dadot, 8-3, at the top position, while junior Laura Ring and freshman Maja Kazimieruk defeated Isabel Brito and Alexandra Lindahl 8-3 at the No. 3 spot. Houston freshmen Bryony Hunter and Alexandra Pickerill suffered the only UH loss in doubles, falling at the No. 2 spot 9-8.
The Cougars took a 1-0 lead into singles play, however, Southeastern quickly leveled the match with UH`s Kazimieruk retiring against Dadot at the No. 4 spot, after being a set down. Starratt regained the advantage for the Cougars with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Hagiu at the No. 6 spot.
Kazakova went down to Pilon 6-0, 6-4 at the No. 3 spot, but Hunter restored Houston's lead by winning 6-2, 6-4 against Chelini, in the top singles match.
The win for Houston was decided at the No. 2 spot, as Kacprzyk defeated Nina Schmied 6-2, 6-3. The final score was 5-2 to Houston, after junior Ring won at the No. 5 spot against Brito, 6-3, 6-3.
The win will be the last time the Cougars will host a match on their home court until April 3, when welcome Southern to town.
"I hope we build on what we've learned in this match and use it on the road trip," Severance added. "We are playing with several bumps and bruises but everybody is this time of year. It's nice to know we can win when are not playing our best."
