HOUSTON - The University of Houston baseball team lost the first game of the Sliver Glove Series, 8-2, against Rice Tuesday evening at Reckling Park.

The Owls took a 4-0 lead after the first three innings and never looked back, dropping Houston's overall record this season to 2-5. Rice scored the first run of the night on a long ball off Rick Hague in the second inning and they would then tack on three more runs in the third to increase their lead.

Joel Ansley scored the Cougars first run in the fifth inning after reaching base on a single up the middle. Caleb Ramsey hit a double to center field that brought in the Houston run.

The Owls second home run of the contest came in the sixth inning. Jeremy Rathjen sailed one over the left field fence scoring two runs.

M.P. Cokinos recorded the first home run of his career with a shot to left field in the seventh inning but the Owls answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning.

After a scoreless eighth inning, Houston gave themselves a chance to make a run in the ninth, loading the bases with two outs but the Rice pitching staff would be able to get themselves out of the jam and hang on for the win.

With the loss, Houston falls to 69-83 all-time against Rice. The Silver Glove Series will continue with a three game series on April 1-3 at Reckling Park and the final game is slated to be played at Cougar Field on May 18.

Houston will be back in action this weekend when they travel across town for the Houston College Classic at Minute Maid Park. The tournament will kick off Friday at 3:30 p.m. against Missouri; it will continue at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday against Texas and conclude at 2:30 p.m. against Texas Tech.
