HOUSTON - The University of Houston women's basketball team has earned its first trip to the postseason since 2005 as Friday it was announced that Houston had secured Conference USA's automatic bid the Women's National Invitational Tournament. The Cougars will have to wait until Monday night when the entire field is announced to learn their WNIT destination and opponent.
Houston finished the regular season 17-14 overall and ended C-USA play in a tie for second place with a 10-6 league record. Tulane originally earned the league's WNIT automatic bid by virtue of its regular season championship. However, when the Green Wave defeated UAB in the C-USA Championship game Friday to earn a trip to the NCAA Tournament, the WNIT invitation was extended to the Cougars, who were the league's No. 2 seed by tiebreakers over Memphis and SMU.
The Cougars have now made eight postseason appearances in program history, including three previous trips to the WNIT (1991, 2001 and 2002). During the 2002 WNIT, the Cougars were the tournament's runner-up after winning four straight games in the event before falling to Oregon 54-52 in the championship game.
