HOUSTON - University of Houston women's basketball junior forward Courtney Taylor earned Conference USA Player of the Week honors on Monday after averaging a double-double, with 14.0 points and 13.5 rebounds per game against a pair of tough C-USA opponents in UTEP and Tulane.
In the two games, Taylor went 13-of-29 from the floor and 2-of-3 from the free throw line for a total of 28 points while adding a team-high 27 rebounds to along with eight steals and three assists.
The Crockett, Texas, native had a game high 18 points, eight boards and five steals in Thursday's blowout win over UTEP to help the Cougars snap a two-game losing streak. Back in action against C-USA leader Tulane on Saturday, Taylor scored 10 points and grabbed 19 rebounds, tying her single-game high and leaving her just one short of the school record for boards in a single game as the Cougars pulled out the victory. The double-double performance increased Taylor's school record career total to 38.
The Player of the Week accolade was the fifth such career honor for Taylor and third this season. In the five times she has received the award, Taylor has averaged 17.1 points and 12.8 rebounds in ten games during those weeks.
Taylor looks to continue to lead the Cougars as they wrap up the regular season against cross-town rival Rice, at 7:00 p.m. Thursday in Hofheinz Pavilion. The team needs a win to lock in one of the top four spots in the league and to earn a bye in the 2010 Conference USA Championships.
