After leading the Cougars to a pair of wins that vaulted them into first place in the league standings, University of Houston women's basketball junior forward Courtney Taylor was named Co-Conference USA Player of the Week on Monday. She shared this honor with Dietra Caldwell of UTEP.
Taylor averaged 16 points, 12 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 3.5 steals in two games last week. Her back-to-back double-doubles, made Taylor the new record holder for the most double-doubles in Cougar women's basketball history with 36, passing former Cougar great and WNBA All-Star Sancho Lyttle, who had 35 from 2003-2005. In those 36 double-doubles, which came in 78 career games in a Cougar uniform, Taylor has averaged 16.9 points and 12.1 rebounds.
The Crockett, Texas, native had a 20-point, 14-rebound performance last Thursday against Rice to carry the Cougars to a 72-53 victory. She followed that performance with her record-setting double-double against Memphis on Sunday, scoring 12 points and grabbing 10 rebounds to help the Cougars win 68-62 and ascend to the top of C-USA standings.
This season, Taylor has been one of C-USA's most consistently dominant performers, she ranks sixth in the conference with a 15.3 points per game average while ranking second in rebounding, averaging 10.1 rebounds per contest, and in a tie for third with a 1.3 per game block shots average. In league play, she has stepped up her game even more, ranking second in the league in scoring (17.8 points per game), second in rebounding (11.1 per game), fourth in steals (2.6 per game) and seventh in block shots (0.9).
This is the fourth time in her career Taylor has been named C-USA Player of the Week, and the second time this season.
