Women's Hoops Ready to Renew Rivalry with Rice

HOUSTON - For the first time this season, the University of Houston women's basketball team will renew its rivalry with crosstown rival Rice as Thursday the two squads square off at 7 p.m. inside Rice's Tudor Fieldhouse.
The Cougars (10-10) will put their three-game road winning streak on the line in the contest as they try to improve their position in the Conferences USA standings where they currently sit in a tie with the Owls for sixth place. Rice enters Thursday contest with an identical 10-10 overall record and 4-3 league mark.
Junior forward Courtney Taylor remains on the verge of tying the UH career double-double school record with 34 career double-doubles, just one shy of record holder Sancho Lyttle. During C-USA play, the Crockett, Texas, native ranks first in rebounding, averaging 10.9 boards per contest, and second in scoring at 18.3 points per game. She is coming off a career-high 31 point performance against Tulsa last week.
In addition to leading the Cougars in scoring this season, junior guard Brittney Scott is vying to join Taylor in the 1,000 point club as she leads the Cougars with a 17.2 point per game average and 804 career points.

Hoops for the Cure - Sunday Feb. 7 vs. Memphis
Following the Rice contest, the Cougars return home to Hofheinz to take part in "Hoops for the Cure" where they will help raise breast cancer awareness by facing Memphis at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
At the Memphis game, fans that feel compelled will have the opportunity to donate to The Rose, a non-profit breast cancer organization. For more information on The Rose please visit their website at www.therose.org.
All across the country, women's basketball teams are joining together to help fight against cancer as part of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association' s Pink Zone initiative, which is aimed at raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. The events planned for the day include recognition of cancer survivors as well as halftime entertainment presented by the Highflyers, a jump rope performing group.
The first 200 fans inside Hofheinz Pavilion will receive a free pink t-shirt which they can wear in support the Cougars, who will wear pink shooting shirts during pregame warm ups and pink apparel during the contest.
